(This is going to be long, nerdy, and filled with pictures. Enjoy!)Average Twilight Fan: “My fandom is a century old vampire!”
Me: “Well, mine is 906 year old LORD OF TIME!” Pwned.
No, but on the serious, I am recently obsessed with Doctor Who and Torchwood…And ya know what? It’s about bloody time. Often times I’ll discover something I know I should have fallen in love with long before. Top Gear? Saw the ads for ages before watching it and realizing it’s amazing. Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy? Took the movie and years of my friends telling me to read it before I did. Heck, even Lord of the Rings AND Harry Potter had to be forced into my hands by my friend Angie who spent months insisting that I would love them. (Just realized all these things are British!)
And Doctor Who, a show I always knew about, but never really found the time to get into it. It was there, I would get around to it one day…
Well, I got around to it. It started with the 4th season Finale, strangely, and I was intrigued. I watched some Torchwood, here and there, then saw Children of Earth, and I was hooked. I saw Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead and I. Was. IN LOVE.Oh David Tennant, you are MY Doctor.
So we got out grubby little hands on the Doctor Who DVD's and started recording any episode that came on TV, and Steve & I have been total Doctor Who Nutters ever since."I'm the Doctor. I'm a Time Lord. I'm from the planet Gallifrey in the constellation of Kasterborous. I'm 903 years old and I'm the man who's gonna save your lives and all six billion of the people on the planet below. You got a problem with that?"
For those of you who don't know, Doctor Who is a Sci-Fi series from England about a time traveling Time Lord known as The Doctor. He goes about in his ship, the Tardis, with a companion of some sort, and does little things like, oh, saves people and planets and stops wars and is a hero and an all around B.A.M.F.
It was a huge hit back in the day, then went away for a bit, before coming back to a whole new era of fans. The Doctor is played by different people, as he regenerates after something fetal happens to him...so the character doesn't die but its an easy way to explain why suddenly he has a new face. In Series 1 he was played by Christopher Eccleston, and he was...all right. Maybe it's because I saw David Tennant episodes first or who knows. But Doctor #9 was lovely and fun and around for one season and there was Annoying Rose along with him...
But then The Doctor regenerated, and turned into Doctor #10, Doctor David Tennant, my Doctor. And I love him. Of course, Annoying Rose stuck around, and in time there was Martha and my BELOVED Donna. I love Donna the most of all his main companions, because she's spunky, bright, and after Annoying Rose and Martha being madly in love with the guy (Who can blame them, though?), Donna is just his friend. His equal. And it's grand. They have a great relationship, and it's totally how I want Bris and Gwin to be. But I digress. The Doctor Donna pairing will always be my favorite. And it is why I sob like a baby when she has to leave. *tear*
And other people traveled with The Doctor here and there, little characters and the one who really has my heart, 51st Century Time Agent and all around HOT B.A.M.F. Captain Jack Harkness. (We'll get to him later.) Here is a picture of pretty much all of the Doctor's Companions up to the end of season 4. (L-R) Sarah Jane smith, Mickey, Jackie, Annoying Rose, Doctor!, Martha, Donna and Jack, crouching down and looking good!
But it's a fun show. And it keeps me on the edge of my seat. There really hasn't been an episode that I didn't honestly enjoy...They can range from really funny and whimsical to dark and dramatic to sad love stories and utterly horrifying scary ones. (I still can't even think about the episode "Blink" with out shuddering in FEAR.)
It's a lovely show to get into, especially because you fall just madly in love with The Doctor. And there are beautiful themes of living your life, being brave, being kind. I am all about it, and will love it always.Of course, David Tennant is leaving the show this year (*sobs*), and he's being replaced by a slightly awkward looking, very young Doctor.
And then...there is Torchwood.
So Captain Jack Harkness, a man who is just walking sex, was a companion and friend to The Doctor in the first season. And though he died in a Darlek invasion, Annoying Rose was able to bring him back to life after having been possessed with the Time Vortex. (Follow me.) Well, this caused Jack to remain a fixed point in time...in other words, he's immortal. He can be killed, and has been, A LOT, but he always comes back to life a moment or two later. He can even be exploded...and his body...will slowly grow back...Yep.But we'll ignore the silliness of all that and instead turn with Captain Jack to Torchwood, his show. Torchwood is a very adult Sci-Fi show about a team of alien hunters in Cardiff, Wales, who try to prevent aliens from taking over the earth, and investigate other sort of strange occurrences. Captain Jack has a team who would follow him into death (Aaaaannnnnddddd most of them have.), and the team consists of (L-R) Ianto, Gwen, Jack, Tosh and Owen.
And it's a fantastic show. It also is really witty, and full of really lovely, very adult moments that play with love, fear, loss, sex, death, happiness, and so on. This series is set in the 21st century, and poor Jack has been stuck since he accidentally went back a wee bit too far into the 19th Century. But it really is a fantastic show. And the love affair...the love...the bond between Jack and Ianto...well...it just makes my heart flutter and cry.
*cries a little* Ianto! (BTW, Ianto is my new favorite name. I love the Welsh!)And Gwen...Gwen is SUCH a bad ass and strong woman. True, she usually ends up in all the crazy sort of binds and always being taken hostage and what not, but she doesn't give up with out a fight. She's like Don and Bris all rolled up in one awesome, beautiful tough chick who totally kicks butt.
So, of course I LOVE these shows. They are right up Maggi Alley! The Sci-Fi, the humor, the relationships, the themes of courage and love. And it helps that so many good looking people are on them. On the serious, David Tennant and John Barrowman are....gorgeous. Just...so, so sexy. Oh my goodness. And I'm not going to lie, they are beautiful. Just toss me in the middle. Off I go into the wild green yonder!
Also, don't feel bad for or worry about Steve. John Barrowman is his total man crush. He's in it with me. (We're an odd couple.)But you know why the Doctor is the coolest all around?
Cause he chills with The Stig!Just one more post to go before the big 100! The Giveaway items are being tended to, and all is right in my little world. Lots of love! I'm going to go hop the Tardis and have an adventure!
"One day, I will come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs, and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine." - The Doctor
This is one obsession you are going to have on your own. But hey, I approve of this crush. Much better than Bug-Eyed Ben from Lost, hahahaha.
ReplyDeleteWhat? You don't like the Doctor Dionne? *gasps!* No, just kidding. Like all my silly obsessions, they are not for everyone, but they are for me! :-D
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I concede that The Doctor and Jack are much better looking than Ben...but I still love my Ben!
I was with you all the way until you talked about "annoying Rose", I love Rose she is beautiful, smart and loves both the Doctor and Cpt. Jack. and the Doctor loves her.
ReplyDeleteYou are spot on about Gwen, she is so wonderful, tough, strong, beautiful, sexy, etc.
I am not sure about the lady who will play companion to the new Doctor, she looks like one of the school girls from Skins.
Rose was lovely, but she just got on my nerves most of the first season. I don't know. Sometimes she's just a bit too much of a old fashioned damsel in distress for me!
ReplyDeleteAnd Donna holds my heart. I just adore her.
Thanks for reading and posting a comment! That's lovely of you. :-D
Ok, well haven't seen either show...both look very fun!
ReplyDeleteMy dad got me into Dr Who! I LOVE IT. He's been watching it since the 70s, but he likes the newer ones better. During the episode when The Doctor and Rose accidentally go to a parallel universe and have to stop the Cybermen, I was so excited to see Barty Crouch AND Barty Crouch Jr from the fourth Harry Potter movie, together. Dr Who is a lovely obsession, and I must admitt, I am also obsessed :D
ReplyDeleteI caught a David Tennant, Dr WHO episode on BBC America, 3 Weeks ago and have been watching a few episodes every day since ( I've a friend with an AmazonPrime account) I'm in the fourth seaseon/series, and I know that there weill be a new Doctor, and its bothersome.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile John Barrowman...YUM!
Apart from Jack Harkness/John Barrowman (where I am entirely neutral), I am with you all the way. It's such a shame that David Tennant was replaced like that by Matt Smith (who, in my opinion, is completely awful at carrying off the role of world protector. But that's just me.)
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised you haven't made any comment on Captain Jack possibly being the Face of Boe...
ReplyDeletejust happened upon this post because I couldn't stop thinking about david
ReplyDeleteor as I call him ''doctor awesome ''my friend may laugh but I m not the only
frenzied fan . I love the new doctor I keep on having this fantasy about driving down to utah and just happening to meet him and him taking me
to meet the crew and I suddenly become dr. song so the 2 of us kick some silence together.the ironi thing is that I have a crush on ben from LOST too
I am absolutely in love with Doctor Who; I just can't get enough. But after reading this I think I'll end up starting a new obsession over Torchwood..... Which I'm currently downloading!
